Agriculture and the Work on a Farm

There is never a dull moment on the Birkenhof farm – depending upon the season, there is always something to do and thus, to watch.

Depending on the season, there are always different things to do around the Birkenhof farm. Sowing and harvesting in the garden, hay harvest on the fields, and don’t forget about taking care of all those colorful flowers and shrubs all around the farm. When spring approaches, there is much work and planting to do in the garden and on the fields, for example potatoes, or lettuce, herbs and many other plants.
The farm’s garden with an abundance of produce, is available to our guests after prior arrangement! Is there anything better than a freshly harvested crunchy head of lettuce or fresh aromatic herbs?

Farmer’s wife Klara harvests the farm herbs and – after they have been dried – turns them into tasty herb salt. Fresh strawberries, raspberries, currants and blueberries are turned into syrup and jam.
There are also many elderberry trees on the farm. Their fragrant blossoms and blackberries are the basis of fruit jellies, syrups, teas and “Hollermulla” (a highly concentrated elderberry syrup). “Hollermulla” is a well-tried home remedy for mild coughs.

In autumn, the time has come to winterize the Birkenhof farm: Trees are felled and firewood is stacked to dry, the cows return from the Alps, calves are born and crops are brought in from the fields and the garden. With the beginning of winter, there is a little more peace and quiet at the farm. An eventful year has passed, and we look back and review what happened; at the same time, plans are already in the making for the new year.
